In loving memory of Melinda Ramona Melendez, long-time public education expert, died peacefully Wednesday, January 20, with her son by her side. Her death was caused by a stroke. She was born on August 31, 1948, in Dinuba. She attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Mt. View and graduated from Holy Cross High School in Mt. View in 1966. Melinda, 61, began her distinguished career as an expert in education and higher education public policy and state budgetary issues as a classroom teacher, bilingual education resource teacher and program coordinator. For over 30 years, she gave countless hours promoting excellence in education for children through the various education policy positions she held for the California State Legislature and the Association of California School Administrators. Most recently, she worked as the Senior Education Consultant for Majority Leader Senator Gloria Romero. Her footprints and spirit will always remain in the California capitol halls and on the legislative accomplishment she championed. Through her enthusiasm to seek positive changes for children and bilingual education, she became a founding member of the Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project. By virtue of her extensive experience, she served as an advisory board member at many educational organizations, most notably at the California State University, Sacramento, the Journal of Latino and Education, and on the Board of Directors for the Girl Scouts of the USA. She enjoyed art, music, going to concerts, traveling, genealogy and mentoring young people. She was a devoted member of the Boz Scaggs Fan Club. Her flair and passion for life which was shown through her love of artistically inspired jewelry will always be remembered. Melinda was preceded in her death by her father Mel Melendez. She is survived by her son Joaquin Peterson, her daughter-in-law Donna and her granddaughter Madeleine. She is also survived by her mother Lupe Melendez, her sisters Vera Palmer and Stephanie Connor, her foster brother Frank Sandoval, and many family and friends. Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan 29 from 6-9:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. at Cusimano Family Colonial Mortuary, 96 El Camino Real, Mtn. View. A Funeral Mass will be held on Sat, Jan. 30 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Simons Catholic Church, 1860 Grant Rd, Los Altos. A Celebration of Life in Sacramento will be scheduled at a future date. Contributions in her honor should be directed to St. Joseph Catholic School, 1120 Miramonte Avenue, Mt. View.
