Obituary for Martha J. Gaspich

Martha J. Gaspich
November 2, 1926 – December 15, 2018

Martha Jean Gaspich passed away peacefully on December 15, 2018, and was reunited with the love of her life, her deceased husband, Dr. Robert J. Gaspich, as well as with her parents, Edna and Fred Gordon, and her brothers, Tom, Fred Jr., and Bobby. Martha was born on November 2, 1926 in Monmouth, Illinois. She lived and worked on her family’s farm, and learned the fine arts of cooking and baking from her Mother – lessons that made Martha well-known for her excellent cooking and her exceptional pies.

When she was 18 years old, Martha began her nursing career at Garfield Park Hospital in Chicago, where she met Robert J. Gaspich, a medical school student. Martha and Robert were married on August 10, 1946, and they were later transferred by the U.S. Navy to Mare Island, Vallejo, California, and Hunters Point, San Francisco. Following residencies in Milwaukee and Champaign, Illinois, Martha and Robert returned to California in 1956 and established their longtime home in Los Altos Hills. In her later years, Martha lived in Los Altos, Carmel, and Cupertino.

Martha was well-known as a very sweet, caring, and special lady throughout her many roles in life – as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, nurse, friend, volunteer, member and Eucharistic Minister at St. Nicolas Church, golfer, dancer, music fan, party hostess, world traveler, and all around wonderful woman who touched so many lives with her warmth and kindness. As members of the Stanford Golf Club and the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel, Martha and Robert loved playing golf together, and of course, Martha shot a hole-in-one at the Quail Lodge Golf Course!

After returning to nursing school and graduating in 1968 from De Anza College, Martha served as a Registered Nurse for 25+ years at El Camino Hospital, caring for thousands of patients with skill, compassion, and kindness. Although always busy working and keeping up with her large family, Martha found time with Robert to host many parties with their friends and family, and really enjoyed sharing food, fun, wine, music, dancing, and laughter – and particularly the many dances with her loving husband, Robert.

Martha is survived by her eight children – Mary Pat, Eileen Jones (Ken), Tom (Christine Owens), Nancy Barry (Rick), James (Mary Jane Weber), Susan Ferrone (Kenny), Jane, and Kathleen (Mike Anderson), as well as her seven grand children and three great-grand children.
