Obituary for Joan Marie Scilacci

Joan Scilacci
Resident of Cupertino
August 16, 1928 - March 25, 2018

Joan Marie Rudolph Scilacci went to heaven on March 25, Palm Sunday. Joan was a strong and compassionate woman, who lived a full life, dedicated to her family, faith and community. During her final days, family and friends surrounded her.

Joan grew up in Crown Point, Indiana, and graduated from Purdue University with a BS in Home Economics. She enjoyed an exciting career as a stewardess with United Airlines. While flying out of San Francisco, Joan met the love of her life, Bill Scilacci, a WWII Navy veteran. After a whirlwind courtship, they married on September 6, 1952, and settled into 65 years together. In 1964 the family moved to Willow Glen, where they lived for over 40 years, raising four children: Carol, Jim, Ann and Tom. In 2004 Joan and Bill moved to The Forum at Rancho San Antonio, a retirement community in Cupertino.

Joan was passionate about helping children and those in need. She volunteered at Bellarmine College Preparatory, Presentation High School, Santa Clara University and the The Tech Museum of Innovation. As a Court Appointed Special Advocate she worked tirelessly. She was also a longtime benefactor of Eastfield, now known as Uplift Family Services, Ladies of Charity, and the San Jose Auxiliary benefiting Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford.

Joan is survived by her husband, Bill; her children, Carol, Jim, Ann, and Tom; their spouses Doug Tanner, Linda Jones Scilacci, Dick Bower and Jennifer Webster Scilacci; as well as her seven grandchildren: Lauren, Wynn, and Leigh Tanner; James, Brian, and Jenna Scilacci; and Christopher Bower. Also living are her brother, Joe Rudolph, three sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews

A Funeral Mass is planned for Saturday, April 7th, 11:30 am, at Saint Simon Catholic Parish, 1860 Grant Road, Los Altos. A Celebration of Joan’s life will follow at The Forum, 23500 Cristo Rey Drive, Cupertino. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Joan’s name to your favorite charity or one Joan supported, as listed above.
