Obituary for Lucille Miyoko Nakanishi

Lucille Miyoko Nakanishi died peacefully at home on March 30th with her family at her bedside. Miyo was born in Palo Alto, California, to Hideo and Misao Kaneko on June 7, 1937. Along with her family she was interned during World War II in Topaz, Utah. Following the war, she attended elementary school in Menlo Park and graduated in 1955 from Menlo-Atherton High School where she met Don Nakanishi. Miyo attended the University of Southern California earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and began her career as a kindergarten teacher in San Mateo. Don and Miyo married on August 23, 1959. She worked with Don at their carnation nursery in East Palo Alto while her raising her young children. Over the years she worked in administrative and accounting jobs with the Palo Alto Buddhist Temple, Marcus and Millichap, and Oncept. After selling the nursery and retiring, Miyo and Don have enjoyed living in Redwood City and spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Miyo was also very active at the Palo Alto Buddhist Temple, spearheading many projects including the Tomonikai activities for seniors which she helped initiate in 1988. She also loved playing bridge with her friends and hosting holiday gatherings.

Miyo was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Terry Kaneko and Marion Dumont. She is survived by husband Don, daughter Vickie Izuka (Ty) and sons Kendal Nakanishi (Adelia) and Michael Nakanishi (Angela), brothers Herb Kaneko and Rich Kaneko, 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews from the Kaneko and Nakanishi families.

A memorial service will be held at the Palo Alto Buddhist Temple, 2751 Louis Road, Palo Alto, CA 94303, on Monday, April 9 at 2 pm.
