Obituary for Paul M. Wang

Paul M. Wang passed away peacefully in the presence of family members on Aug. 23, 2018 at Villa Siena in Mountain View. He was 91 years old.

Paul was born in Tianjin, China in 1927. He was the oldest of seven children and attended Catholic primary and secondary schools, and spent summers on his grandfather's farm. He was attracted to the intellectual rigor and theological debates of his Jesuit high school and entered the novitiate in Beijing upon graduation. As the Chinese Communists expanded their control in 1948, the Jesuit students were forced to leave their families and evacuate, first to Shanghai and then to Hong Kong. By May of 1949, the seminarians found themselves in Manila, Philippines, where they resumed their theological training. After completing three years of religious study, Paul chose to leave the Jesuits, but this formation greatly influenced how he lived his life.

Upon leaving the seminary, Paul enrolled at the University of Santo Tomas, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. He supported his studies by teaching Mandarin at the Jesuit Chinese Language School, which is where he met a young missionary who would eventually assist him in coming to San Francisco as a refugee in 1956. Within a month of arriving in the USA, Paul began his career as an electrical design engineer, working his way to eventual president of Ackerman-Practicon Consultants for the last 15 of his 40+ year career. During this time, he designed lighting, power, and communication systems for many of the buildings that characterized early Silicon Valley and the Bay Area, including HP, Intel, Varian, Stanford University, Candlestick Park, St. Joseph Cathedral, and Kaiser and O’Connor Hospitals.

Paul’s devotion to his family and his Catholic faith were the cornerstones of his life. Shortly after arriving, he joined St. Mary’s Chinese Mission in Chinatown, where he met and eventually married May Wong, his beloved wife of 61 years. In 1964, he moved his family from San Francisco to the less foggy climate of Los Altos, where he could satisfy another passion, gardening. With five kids to school, he quickly became involved in the community of St. Simon Church, teaching catechism to teens. Over 54 years he actively contributed to the Men's Club, the Knights of Columbus, the Serra Club, as a lay minister and Bible study facilitator, and as a Regent of St. Patrick Seminary.

Paul will be greatly missed by his beloved wife, May; his beloved children and their spouses: Andrew (Joanne); Barbara (Jaime), Clarence (Cristiana), Dominic (Sophia), Elizabeth (Jon); and grandchildren: Daniel (America), Rachel (Enrico), Katherine, Felice, Nina, Nicolas, Domenica, Ian, Oliver; and great-granddaughter Elenor.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Francis Center, Redwood City, CA or a favorite charity of your choice.
